Celebrating 153 Years/Occasion

"Celebrating Our Past: Looking To God For Our Future" Jeremiah 29:11

Submitted by Mrs. N. Smith

On Sunday, August 26, 2018, Salem Gilfield Baptist Church celebrated its 153rd Church Anniversary. Our scripture was from Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for You,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,”

What a Glorious day this was! I now reflect on this well-known song, “Surely The Present of the Lord is in This Place.”

“Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place, I could feel his mighty power and his grace.  I can hear the brush of angels’ wings.  I can see glory on each face; Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.”

This was indeed a great day in the history of our church as we celebrated 153rd years of God’s Divine Faithfulness. By all accounts, as I read, and listen to the stories of old, this church has a ‘Great and Rich History,’   Salem Gilfield has always been a part of and held membership in our local, regional, and national Christian organizations.  Our church structure, auxiliaries, and the education department is a testament to the training that our ministers, deacons, and teachers have received at various institutes and /or conventions.

Did you know that Salem Gilfield is a member of the Progressive National convention, Incorporated (pnbc.org)?  The PNBC was organized in 1961, and led by some Black-oriented civil rights ministers and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?  Did you know that Salem Gilfieldis also is a member of the Memphis Baptist Congress of Christian Education, which was organized in 1936?  Former Pastors of Salem (Salem Gilfield Baptist Church) were presented: Rev. W. L. Vernado, and Rev. A. L. McCargo.  Mrs. Fishner and Professor J. L. Buckner were elected to an office (Both Salem Gilfield members).

Why is its importance to celebrate our annual anniversary? Joshua 4 –  tells us to remember from whence we came.  It is important to tell the story and to leave a legacy for our children who are coming behind us.  So, the month of August was devoted to celebrating the 153 years of the rich history of our church, and thanking  “God’s for His Amazing Faithfulness”.  We are indeed thankful and grateful to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing us to exist 153 years.

Thanks to each of you for finding the time to be present on Sunday to witness this proud day in the history of our church.

“We are Celebrating Our Past, and we are looking to God for our future.”
